Kids In The Creek Program

Kids in the Creek” is a program for high school students to get hands-on experience studying how to maintain healthy stream ecosystems. Mr. Helleson’s General Biology class and Ms. Lovelace’s Environmental Science class spent the day at the Entiat Fish Hatchery. Students participated in different experiments that included water quality studies, observing fish dissections for disease tendencies, observing the riparian habitat, collecting and classifying macroinvertebrates, along with collecting stream data to help maintain healthy environments for the spawning salmon. In addition, the students were introduced to a wide variety of occupations in stream ecology. Mr. Helleson stated that many students were suprised to find out that there are jobs where they get paid to be outside and make a difference in the health of our natural resources.
