POWER STANDARDS
Spanish Levels I and II
GOAL: COMMUNICATION. COMMUNICATE IN LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH
STANDARD 1:
Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
· Ask and answer simple questions about familiar topics orally and in writing.
STANDARD 2:
Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
· Understand brief written and oral materials on familiar topics.
STANDARD 3:
Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
· Demonstrate some accuracy in pronunciation and intonation when presenting well-rehearsed material on familiar topics.
GOAL: CULTURES. GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF OTHER CULTURES
STANDARD 4:
Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied.
· Identify similarities and differences of everyday life in the US and a Spanish-speaking country.
STANDARD 5:
Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied.
· Experience, discuss, and analyze expressive products of the culture, including selections from various literary genres and the visual arts.
GOAL: CONNECTIONS. CONNECT WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES AND ACQUIRE INFORMATION
STANDARD 6:
Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.
· Identify and/or use information and skills from other disciplines in the foreign language classroom.
STANDARD 7:
Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are available only through the foreign language and its culture.
· Use a variety of sources to prepare reports on topics of personal interest, and compare these to information obtained on the same topics written in English.
GOAL: COMPARISONS. DEVELOP INSIGHT INTO OWN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
STANDARD 8:
Students demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.
· Identify basic grammatical structures of Spanish and compare them to English.
STANDARD 9:
Students demonstrate an understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
· Hypothesize about the origins of idioms as reflections of culture, citing examples from Spanish and English.
GOAL: COMMUNITIES. PARTICIPATE IN MULTILINGUAL COMMUNITIES AT HOME AND AROUND THE WORLD
STANDARD 10:
Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.
· Students communicate orally or in writing with Spanish-speaking students regarding topics of personal interest or community or world concern.
STANDARD 11:
Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
· Play sports or games from Spanish-speaking cultures.
STANDARD 12:
Students engage in the activities which prepare them to use the target language to achieve career goals.
Experience samples of art, literature, music, etc., representative of a Spanish-speaking culture.
